A personal message from Chris Rupe
“I’m really sorry for the current situation and I just wanted to say to everyone, that I really appreciate the support.
“Thanks so much for your understanding, Aucklanders. I know you loyally share the love I’ve had for SPQR for the past 27 years.
“In the meantime, please spread your patronage around other locally owned hospo businesses and show your support for the challenging but highly rewarding job they do.”

SENATUS POPULUSQUE ROMANUS
When the people and the Senate of Rome joined together, to become one -
thus S.P.Q.R - “A place for everyone“
About
All year round for lunch, dinner, a snack or drinks, you can sit outside with a crisp white tablecloth, or just inside the front door in the portico, where you can still see the ebb and flow of people and traffic on Ponsonby Road.
In Summer enjoy long, languid evenings on the pavement and in winter the glow of candles, and the warmth of the fireplace lure you inside.
You may likely see someone you know wandering past and invite them to join for a glass or two.
It is a place for everyone, and all are welcome.
"Stepping through the
looking glass:
A magical reality"
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
“Stepping through the looking glass:
Since inception this has been an iconic space to eat and drink, its people diversely splendid, its food reliably good. But something seems to have taken place of late that has seen the edge further sharpened. The space is still special.
It has an Alice in Wonderland quality that makes you feel like you have stepped into something faintly otherworldly. But the rest has shifted on its axis, just enough to make it feel like it is spinning differently. And we liked it.
The margaritas we drank were not just good
but superb, the Italian red had shifted itself from classic to sublime, the food from really nice to utterly delicious. If you are in Auckland and like quirky people, romance, reds and Italian food -
do yourself a favour. Book in."
